Plain Oblong Glazed Tile Fireplace Hearths
Our fireplace tiles are made from a white earthenware body with a finish in a range of period glazes. We can offer a good range of standard colours and we can make tiled hearths in almost any shape or size. Fenders or kerbs can be incorporated into the hearth if required.
Fireplace tiles have rounded edges incorporated into them that makes them distinctive from other tiles. Traditionally fireplace tiles are twice fired and more robust than a wall tile.
All our tiled fireplace hearths are suitable for use with solid fuels (coal and logs) and with gas or electric fires.
Normally all our hearths will be made 2 inches thick (as is commonly specified in building regulations ), but if required can be of any thickness greater than this.
All hearths come in one piece, grouted and ready to lay. We grout in white unless specified differently .
Variations in patterns of oblong tiles
We make hearths from 6 x 2 inch and 6 x 3 inch tiles. The normal way we lay these out is in a "cross-bonded" design with the round edge formed on the vertical edge tile to the hearth. Using these tiles it is also possible to have a hearth made in a "Herring Bone " pattern or many other variations such as the 6 x 3 inch tiles in a wrap around pattern.
Hearths in the cross bonded pattern were common in the late Victorian/ early Edwardian era, with the commonest tile size then being 4.25 inches x 2.125 inches ( four and a quarter by two and an eighth inches )
We can produce loose hearth tiles in this and any other size up to 6 inches square, and can prefabricate hearths using them. The tiles are made by cutting the correct size from larger tiles and then re-firing them in our kilns. This re-firing makes the glaze remelt and produces a perfect edge.
If you require a hearth using these non-standard sized tiles we can either make up a prefabricated hearth or supply the tiles to be laid in situ. In order to maintain authenticity it is also possible to manufacture the hearth in such a way that it can be lowered into an excavated constructional hearth leaving the tiled surface flush with the floor. In order to comply with solid fuel regulations a flush hearth will need a fixed fender around it to prevent stray embers reaching the carpet or floorboards.
We can make bespoke hearths such as the diamond tile design in Basalt Black and Ivory glazed tiles adapted from a traditional design but at 50mm high in order to comply with current gas regulations. The 'diamond' tiles and the stripe tiles are all cut from larger tiles and the edges refinished - the size may vary to suit the overall measurements required.
As a bespoke hearth the price also varies so is not included in our hearth price calculator - you will need to contact us to get a quotation.
