Does my hearth need to be a particular size depending on whether I'm using solid fuel or gas?

Yes, there are minimum sizes for hearths.

These sizes are either given in the manufacturers instructions if you are having a gas fire or a stove or they are found in part J of the building regulations 2000.

For a closed appliance, i.e. a stove, the minimum recommended distance in front of the appliance is 300mm. (around 12 inches)

For an open fire the minimum recommended distance in front of the appliance is 225 mm. (around 9 inches)
